What is an MCP? A plain-English guide for marketers
An MCP is the plug that lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor use a tool on your behalf. Here is what that means for SEO, analytics, ads and your website, and what it doesn’t mean.

The short answer
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard AI apps use to plug in tools. An “MCP server” is a small service that a company or developer runs so that an AI assistant can use their product: look something up, run a report, draft a change.
Without one, your assistant can only talk about Google Analytics. With one, it can read your actual GA4 numbers and answer the question you asked.
How it connects to your assistant
Three pieces are involved: you, your AI assistant (the “client”), and the MCP server. You add the server to your assistant once. From then on, when a question needs that tool, the assistant calls it, gets a result, and uses it in its answer.
- You ask a question in plain words, such as “which pages lost clicks this month?”
- Your assistant sees it has a Search Console tool and asks permission to call it.
- The MCP server fetches the data from Search Console with your credentials.
- Your assistant reads the result and answers, often with a table or next step.
Some servers are hosted: you paste a web address into your assistant and sign in. Others run on your own computer, which usually means installing Python or Node.js and editing a configuration file. Our directory marks which is which, because it decides whether a tool works in claude.ai or ChatGPT on the web.
What marketers use MCPs for
- Research: keyword, competitor and backlink data from Semrush, Ahrefs or DataForSEO.
- Reporting: GA4 through Google’s Analytics MCP, ad performance through Google Ads or Meta.
- Doing: drafting a Klaviyo campaign, publishing a HubSpot page, or editing a Webflow site.
- Deciding: getting a ranked list of what to change, which is what Dance’s Digital Marketing + SEO connector is built for.
What an MCP is not
An ordinary integration or API is not automatically an MCP. Zapier, a native Slack integration or a Chrome extension may connect tools, but unless the vendor publishes an MCP server, your assistant can’t call it this way. We only list products where we found an actual MCP server and identified who maintains it.
An MCP also doesn’t make a tool smarter. The data is only as good as the product behind it, and the answer is only as good as the assistant reading it.
What to be careful about
A server with write access can change real things: campaign budgets, live pages, customer records. Read our guide to read and write access before connecting one to an account that matters. Many servers spend paid API units or a balance on every call, covered in what marketing MCPs cost.
Where to start
Pick one job you do every week and find the server for it in the directory or by task. Then follow our setup guide.
